Description

Natural wine AK 400 Gamay

The AK400 shines just as you’ve come to expect from us. It’s a beautiful, fruity wine with fine acidity, made by pressing the entire bunch by hand with the vertical press. Indeed, pour avoir du bon jus! This wine is one of Bert’s favorites, and you can really taste the North here—the Loire. In fact, it’s a beautiful showcase of the fine yet rustic Gamay grape.

The AK400 Gamay, made by Bertjan Mol, quickly gained a reputation for being a vibrant and fresh natural wine from the Loire region. In particular, drinkers describe it as light, energetic, and packed with bright fruit flavors. The wine expertly showcases Gamay’s characteristic high acidity and a beautifully aromatic bouquet, making it a great choice for those who love juicy red wines with a bit of a punch.

What’s more, it’s a perfect example of a Loire Valley Gamay, with a blend of destemmed and whole-bunch grapes. As a result, the wine is both wild and refined, truly capturing the essence of the region. Many appreciate its minimal intervention approach, since this allows the natural flavors of the grapes to shine through with little to no sulfites added.

Moreover, it’s a versatile wine, pairing well with various foods, particularly light meats and charcuterie. This highlightsits fruit-forward and slightly earthy notes. For more on this, read further on Domaine South or Thirst.

Natural wine Food pairing

For the natural wine AK400 Gamay 2023, a lighter, fresh red wine with bright fruit and earthy tones, the ideal food pairing would be dishes that complement its vibrant acidity and fruitiness without overwhelming its delicate structure. Here some of our favorite pairing options:

  • charcuterie – Cured meats like salami, prosciutto, or chorizo work well with Gamay’s acidity and fruit-forward nature.
  • roasted poultry – Think roast chicken or turkey, especially with herbs like thyme or rosemary, which bring out the earthy notes of the wine.
  • grilled vegetables – Vegetables like bell peppers, zucchini, and mushrooms pair beautifully with Gamay’s fresh acidity.
  • soft cheeses – Creamy cheeses like Brie, Camembert, or goat cheese balance the wine’s brightness and round out the flavors.
  • finally, lightly spiced dishes – Gamay can handle a bit of spice, so lightly spiced dishes like Moroccan lamb or couscous with dried fruits would make a great match.

These pairings highlight the natural wine’s fruity and lively nature while simultaneously allowing its subtle complexity to shine.
